Jack met Todd at Farrow's Music store in Grand Rapids, MI in 1995 where they both were customers. Todd was from Seattle, WA and a student at a small private Christian College in Grand Rapids. Jack met Amanda through Todd, because they both were friends and attended the same college. Todd & Amanda became boyfriend and girlfriend during the course of Hourglass, later they became husband and wife.
Brian and Sean came onto the scene through mutual musical friends in Grand Rapids.
They played in various churches around the Grand Rapids-Holland-Grand Haven area. They also won a Christian Battle of the Bands in 1996 at Resurection Life Church in Grand Rapids.
Hourglass was quite progressive for that time era. They were compared to "The Cranberries" from Ireland.
Jack came up with the band name because the Grand Rapids Press had interviewed him about the Rapture (seriously) in 1995. Jack had told the interviewer that he felt the course of history that we were at, at that time in 1995, was like the last remaining grains of sand to drop in God's prophetic Hourglass. Then the Rapture would happen and the 7 year Tribulation would begin. Jack believed then just as strongly as he does now, we are just 10 years closer for the fullfillment now.
The band was forming at the same time as the interview (God's Timing). So the name Hourglass stuck!!!
